Reading Diaries
Please can reading books and diaries be brought to school each day, as the children need these for their learning. Our aims is for children to read every day with an adult at home to support their learning of reading.

Year 1 Reading Spine:

We have carefully selected these books which we will read with Year 1 over the course of the year. The books link with our wider curriculum learning, expose children to fantastic writing and represent the many cultures in our community.

Year 1 Knowledge Organisers

Our knowledge organisers give a detailed summary of what your child is learning in history, geography and science. They are a very useful tool to help you ask your child about what they have learnt in school. This half term we are focusing on Geography.

Continuous Provision

What Will Continuous Provision Look Like in Year 1?

While we fully believe that a vast amount of quality learning can happen during ‘continuous provision’, we also are very realistic in the fact that not all learning can occur in this way. Our vision is to have a balanced mix of several types of learning:

Direct Input: Each day, the children will have a whole class direct input session for phonics, maths, English and wider. The skills needed for these subjects need to be explicitly taught, and the best way to deliver this is through short, daily taught lessons. There will however, be many opportunities for writing to occur on a daily basis throughout the provision, with access to phonics support materials and with regular ‘live marking’ from adults.

Adult Focus Groups: Children will be continually assessed and drawn into appropriate focus groups led by an adult to complete activities that will move their learning forward. These focus group activities, particularly English, will be completed and recorded in books.

Independent Activities: Some children may complete an activity independently, before having an opportunity to discuss their learning with an adult. This may then become additional work that is recorded in books.â¯

Child Initiated Activities: Children will have access to all areas of the provision. We will fill each area of provision with many opportunities for learning, including maths and writing. We will celebrate their creativity and independence and give as much respect and credit to their child-initiated work as we do to their adult led activities. Throughout time in provision, adults will give verbal feedback, live marking or suggestions to bring learning forward but, at times, it will be more appropriate to just watch, observe and develop relationships with the children.

If you click on the below image, it will take you to the RWI YouTube channel where there are many videos that can aid learning at home. Please also read the phonics book your child has in their bag as this matches the current level they are working at.

Your child has a Read Write Inc. reading book in their bag which matches the phonics level they are learning at school. When working at home with your child, please practise learning how to read and spell these words.
