English as an Additional Language

At Sythwood  the number of pupils from ethnic minority heritage is greater than found nationally, including a large proportion of pupils learning English as an Additional Language.

New Arrival – A child who has moved to the country within the last 3 years and does not speak English as their first language. Usually speaks no / little English.

Early Stages of English – A New Arrival who has basic English, but is not fluent. Usually has learnt / been taught in English in their home country.

Advanced EAL – A New Arrival or EAL child who has a good knowledge of English, but still struggles with some aspects. For example; understanding and use of grammar, understanding more complex ideas or instructions, or organising their thoughts into a written form.

EAL (English as an Additional Language) – A child who speaks English as a second language.
