We aim to develop children's abilities in the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing so that they are able to learn and enjoy all other subjects. We want children to develop critical responses to what they hear and read and to take part in role-play and drama.
We aim for children to speak confidently and to listen to other's views and opinions. We encourage children to use language to express their ideas, views and feelings in different situations.
We also aim for all children to read and write independently and with enthusiasm. By encouraging children to read a wide range of story, poetry and information books we want them to develop a love of written language. All children take home a reading book every day. In the infants we teach phonics every day in smaller groups. Parents are encouraged to support their child by hearing them read regularly at home. Children from year 1 onwards also bring spellings home each week.
